Shower Rebuilds & Shower Renovations

In some cases, a shower may have too much underlying damage to be repaired through sealing or tiling alone. When this occurs, part or all of the shower may need to be rebuilt.

Shower Sealed offers a comprehensive shower rebuild and renovation service, working in conjunction with qualified carpenters, screen specialists, and other trades where required.

Why is the structural side of a shower so important?

No matter how high the standard of waterproofing, tiling, regrouting, or sealing, all of these systems rely on the structural integrity of what sits behind and beneath the shower. If the support timbers or sheeting have deteriorated or rotted, this can lead to structural instability. Excessive movement from pre-existing damages can cause waterproofing membranes to fail, grout and sealants to crack, and tiles to loosen or break over time. We have even seen showers with so much structural damage below that they have literally fallen through the floor.

This is why it is critical to properly address any structural issues when they are identified, rather than covering them over. Too often, we come across showers that have been re-waterproofed and tiled at significant cost, only to fail again shortly after because the underlying structural damage was never repaired.

* We offer warranties of up to 7 years, depending on the style, size, condition or service.

How It Works

While our focus is always on sealing leaking showers without removing tiles using our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System, saving our clients time, money, and hassle, there are cases where too many loose or cracked tiles or underlying damage mean a partial or full shower renovation is the only suitable solution.

Our shower renovation or shower rebuild process focuses on repairing any underlying damages behind or under the shower so as to make the areas below or behind the shower structurally sound and ready for waterproofing, tiling, regrouting and sealing. This is a comprehensive service designed to provide long-lasting results and reliability.

We conduct a thorough on-site assessment to locate all potential leak sources, including tiles, grout, seals, junctions, drains, and screens. We also try to identify possible issues in relation to pre-existing damage or design issues that could affect works required.
Depending on works scopes, the base or full shower may require the following: Remove shower screen, tiles, hob if in place, cement bed, existing old waterproofing, repair any damages behind or below the shower then prepare then area ready for waterproofing
Depending on work scopes, the base or full shower is waterproofed to standard, if required a new hob is installed, new cement bed is installed, and the shower is partially or fully retiled. The area is then regrouted and sealed, with a new shower screen typically installed at the end of this process.

What We Fix

While we specialise in sealing leaking showers without removing tiles using our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System, we also offer extensive shower waterproofing and tiling or shower renovation services. Working in conjunction with carpenters, we can repair underlying structural damage to ensure the shower is structurally sound prior to waterproofing, tiling, regrouting and sealing.

Shower Renovations FAQs

If the shower has too many loose or cracked tiles, significant movement, or suspected damage behind or beneath the shower recess, then the most suitable long-term solution is usually part or full shower renovation.

Where damage is present, it needs to be repaired properly. In those cases, sealing, or even waterproofing and tiling the shower is not the correct long-term solution.

As the name suggests, a shower renovation typically involves rebuilding part or all of the shower recess. Working in conjunction with carpenters and screen companies, these works usually include the following:

  • Demolition of the existing shower
  • Repairing any damage behind or beneath the shower
  • Re-sheeting where required
  • Installing new waterproofing
  • Fitting appropriate flanges
  • Building a new cement bed
  • Tiling
  • Regrouting
  • Sealing
  • New shower screen

Shower renovations generally take around 8 to 10 working days, plus however long it takes for the shower screen to be measured, manufactured and installed.

Most shower screen companies will not manufacture the screen until they have carried out a final measure after the shower has been rebuilt. This can often take a further 7 days or more, depending on the supplier and the time of year.

Holiday periods such as Christmas can also create delays if suppliers or screen companies are closed.

Yes, it can, although in many cases the real value is not the renovation itself, but the fact that you can show the shower has been properly fixed, particularly where a waterproofing certificate is available.

One common issue we see is that owners choose not to properly fix a leaking shower before sale. The problem is that building inspectors working for buyers may then report that the bathroom or shower has serious issues, and buyers often use that as a reason to negotiate heavily on price or pull out altogether.

In many cases, a shower renovation is not really a “feature” that attracts buyers in the same way a brand-new designer bathroom might. This is partly because it is often impossible to find matching tiles, so the renovated shower may still look different from the rest of the bathroom.

However, what a proper shower renovation does provide is confidence that the shower is in good working order and that the leak has been addressed properly. That can be very important during a sale.

Being able to honestly say that a leak was identified and the entire shower was renovated to avoid problems for the new owner can be a strong practical benefit.

Generally speaking, we do not see shower renovation as a major way to add extra value beyond fixing a serious defect.

However, if the shower does need renovation, we would strongly suggest doing it as soon as possible rather than delaying until a sale is underway. That helps avoid complications during inspections, negotiations and the sale process.

In many cases, the main resale benefit is not that the renovation adds style value, but that it removes a known problem that could otherwise affect the sale.
