Shower Waterproofing Service!

Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Gold Coast & Tweed Coast

Shower waterproofing refers to the waterproofing membrane installed beneath the surface of your shower. This membrane is designed to capture and control any water that penetrates through tiles and grout lines, acting much like a “bucket” beneath the shower to help protect surrounding areas of your home from water damage.

The traditional method of repairing a failed waterproofing membrane involves removing all tiles and the underlying cement bed, applying a new waterproofing membrane, and then retiling, regrouting, and sealing the shower. When completed correctly, this process aligns with Australian Waterproofing Standards and provides a reliable long-term solution.

At Shower Sealed, our goal with our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System is to save you time, money, and unnecessary disruption by sealing leaking showers without removing tiles wherever possible.

However, if we determine that your shower requires full shower waterproofing and tiling, or complete shower renovation works, all work is carried out in accordance with Australian Waterproofing Standards by licensed professionals.

Shower Sealed specialises in all aspects of Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing, shower regrouting, shower repairs, shower waterproofing, shower tiling, and shower renovation services in conjunction with carpenters and shower screen companies.

* Note the above listed images are from showers that have had complete shower sealing and regrouting services.

* We offer warranties of up to 7 years, depending on the style, size, condition or service.

How It Works

While our primary focus is on sealing leaking showers without removing tiles using our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System, saving our clients time, money, and hassle, there are situations where the extent of the damage is simply too great. This may be due to excessive loose or cracked tiles, significant underlying damage, or a waterproofing failure beyond the scope of a tile-free repair. In these cases, a partial or full shower waterproofing and retiling, or a complete shower renovation, may be the most appropriate long-term solution.

We carry out a detailed inspection to identify possible leakage point, including tiles, grout, sealants, junctions, drains, shower screens, failed waterproofing and or suspected structural issues beneath or behind the shower. We then provide you with our inspection findings along with recommended works and a detailed quote for your specific shower so as you can make an informed decision.

If the shower waterproofing membrane requires replacement, the shower screen will need to be removed, as the membrane is installed beneath the tiles and cement bed. Depending on the quoted scope of works, part or all of the shower tiles, cement bed and, where applicable, the shower hob will be removed. Any underlying damage will then be repaired before the shower is prepared for the installation of a new waterproofing membrane.

Part or all of the shower is waterproofed to standards, if required a new hob is installed, new cement bed is installed, and the shower is partially or fully retiled, depending on the quoted scope of works. The area is then regrouted and sealed, with a new shower screen typically installed at the end of this process.

What We Fix

Shower waterproofing sits beneath the tiles and cement bed within your shower. Over time, due to wear and tear, age, building movement, or poor installation, this waterproofing can become compromised. When this occurs, water often presents as visible damage in surrounding areas.

At Shower Sealed, our first priority is to assess whether your shower can be effectively repaired using our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System without removing tiles, helping you avoid the cost and disruption of tile removal wherever possible. However, if the shower is too deteriorated, with extensive loose or cracked tiles or underlying structural issues, the only appropriate long-term solution may be shower waterproofing and tiling, or full shower renovation works.

Shower Waterproofing FAQs

Correct shower waterproofing is the foundation of protecting your bathroom and surrounding property from water damage.

A simple way to understand this is through a common example we see. While we can often seal leaking showers without removing tiles, by repairing grout, replacing sealants, and addressing leak points, even if a shower appears to be in poor cosmetic condition, there should be no visible water damage to surrounding areas if the shower waterproofing beneath the tiles is functioning correctly.

Shower waterproofing acts much like a “bucket” beneath the shower. In a traditional tiled shower, a small amount of water will naturally pass through grout lines and into the cement bed below. This moisture should then be contained by the waterproofing membrane and directed safely to the waste, preventing it from escaping into other areas of the property.

It is essential that shower waterproofing is installed by a licensed water proofer, with the appropriate certification provided upon completion.

Once you start seeing visible damage or signs of leakage in surrounding areas, it is often due to one of the following:

  • plumbing issues
  • failure of the waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles
  • water bypassing the waterproofed area entirely

Common warning signs include:

  • water stains on skirting boards, vanity units or adjoining walls
  • stains on ceilings below upstairs bathrooms
  • damp or musty smells
  • wet carpet or flooring near the bathroom
  • recurring moisture outside the shower
  • deteriorated grout and sealants
  • loose, cracked or hollow sounding tiles
  • pooling water within the shower

A proper inspection is needed to determine whether the waterproofing itself has failed or whether another issue is causing similar symptoms.

Using our exclusive Ultra Bond Technology shower sealing service, we can seal up to 95% of leaking showers without removing tiles. In many cases, this allows us to stop a shower from leaking without the need for major works.

However, if you are referring to replacing a failed waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles, the only way to do this, and to obtain a waterproofing certificate, is to remove the existing tiles and cement bed, repair any underlying damage, install a new compliant shower waterproofing system, rebuild the base, and then re-tile, re-grout, and seal the shower.

While we can assess whether a shower may be suitable for sealing without tile removal, often helping homeowners avoid significant cost and disruption, our sealing process is not the same as installing a new shower waterproofing system or issuing a waterproofing certificate.

Sealing can be an effective repair option in the right circumstances; however, it is not compliant shower waterproofing / membrane replacement. Where required, we also provide full shower waterproofing, tiling, and renovation services to standard.

For the formal answer to this question, we recommend referring to the official shower waterproofing standards and requirements set out by the QBCC.

Generally speaking, when building a new home or completing a compliant bathroom renovation, the bathroom and shower must be waterproofed in accordance with these standards for a waterproofing certificate to be issued.

This means that the waterproofing system must be installed correctly by a licensed water proofer and meet the required guidelines to ensure long-term protection against water damage.

There are a number of shower waterproofing systems used in the industry; however, one of the most common is a liquid (paint-on) waterproofing membrane. This involves applying multiple coats across the required bathroom or shower areas in accordance with relevant standards.

For specific requirements and correct application methods, we always refer to the applicable waterproofing guidelines and regulations.

In relation to our shower repair works, shower waterproofing is typically carried out after the tiles and cement bed have been removed and any damage behind or beneath the shower has been properly repaired.

Waterproofing / membrane replacement must be completed by a licensed water proofer to receive a certificate.

While there can be some variation depending on the system being used, shower waterproofing is most commonly installed at board level, before the cement bed is constructed.

In simple terms, the waterproofing membrane typically sits beneath the cement bed.

In relation to shower repairs and renovations, shower waterproofing is applied after the tiles and cement bed have been removed and any underlying structural damage has been properly repaired.

Leaking showers are usually caused by one of three main issues: plumbing problems, failure of the shower waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles, or water bypassing the shower waterproofing.

In most homes, the cause will come down to one of these issues, or a combination of them.

This is why it’s important to have a licensed professional properly inspect the shower. At Shower Sealed, we bring over 50 years of diagnostic experience between the owners, and well over 100 years of combined experience across our team.

Great question, the answer largely comes down to experience and a structured inspection process.

While some signs, such as visible damage, deteriorated grout, or failed sealants, may be relatively obvious, it is experience and procedure that help determine the true cause of the issue, whether it relates to plumbing, shower waterproofing, or water bypassing the shower area.

At Shower Sealed, our inspection process is based on more than 50 years of experience between the owners, and well over 100 years of combined experience across our team. That experience helps guide both the diagnosis and the most suitable solution for each individual shower.

The repair options available will depend on the condition of the shower or bathroom. Common options include:

  • Where suitable, seal the shower without removing tiles
  • Where appropriate, carry out partial repairs followed by sealing
  • Partial or full shower waterproofing and tiling works
  • Complete shower renovation
  • Full bathroom renovation

The correct option will always depend on the condition of the shower, the cause of the leak, and the extent of leakage and or the damage involved.

Generally speaking, if you are seeing a large amount of water present even when the shower is not in use, this can indicate a plumbing issue. In this case, we recommend having a licensed plumber attend as soon as possible.

In relation to shower waterproofing, a leak would be considered serious if there is significant staining or visible damage adjoining the shower or beneath it, particularly if the issue appears to have been ongoing for some time.

A leak can also become serious if there are unsafe conditions within the shower itself, such as:

  • Sharp or cracked tiles
  • Loose tiles at risk of falling from walls
  • Heavy mould growth or ongoing moisture issues
  • Water damage affecting the surrounding structure

If you suspect the problem is serious, it is always recommended to have a plumber inspect first. This helps rule out plumbing issues and allows the likely cause, whether plumbing or shower waterproofing, to be identified quickly.

As a general rule, leaking showers should be repaired as soon as possible.

The longer a leak is left, the more damage it can cause, particularly where shower waterproofing has failed and water is able to spread into surrounding areas.

This becomes even more important if there are safety concerns for occupants, such as loose tiles, sharp cracked tiles, significant water damage, or the risk of mould growth.

Even where the leak does not appear severe at first, delaying repairs can lead to increased damage and significantly higher repair costs over time.

In general, we are often forward booked; however, depending on the situation, we will always do our best to assist where a shower issue is urgent or potentially dangerous.

If you are experiencing a serious leak, safety concerns, or possible shower waterproofing failure, we recommend contacting us as soon as possible so we can assess the situation and prioritise where appropriate.
