Shower Tiling Services!

At Shower Sealed, our priority is always to save our clients time, money and hassle by sealing leaking showers without removing tiles wherever possible. As part of our exclusive Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System, we may be able to repair or re-glue a small number of loose or cracked tiles, where suitable and possible, helping avoid the need for more extensive tiling works.

Where a shower has excessive loose or cracked tiles, underlying damage or design issues, partial or full shower waterproofing and retiling is the most appropriate long-term solution. Any damage beneath or behind the shower must also be repaired to ensure the structure is sound before a new waterproofing membrane, tiling, regrouting and sealing are completed.

Why Are Loose, Hollow or Cracked Tiles a Problem?

Tiles, grout and sealants form the first line of surface protection against water penetration within a shower. When tiles become hollow, loose or cracked, movement can occur, leading to grout and sealant failure.

Once this barrier is compromised, water can penetrate behind or beneath the tiles. Over time, this can weaken the tile adhesive, causing more tiles to loosen or crack and allowing the issue to progressively worsen.

In more advanced cases, entire sections of tiles may be at risk of detaching from walls or may have already come away. Water can also penetrate into the underlying cement bed, causing it to deteriorate.

When this occurs, even if the waterproofing membrane is still intact, the shower will typically still require partial or full shower waterproofing and tiling works, including replacement of the cement bed below the shower.

How It Works

Our shower tiling services range from re-securing loose tiles, repairing cracked tiles through to partial or full shower waterproofing and retiling where the damage is more extensive. Following a free onsite inspection, we’ll recommend the most appropriate solution based on the condition of your shower.
We conduct a thorough on-site assessment to locate all potential leak sources, including tiles, grout, seals, junctions, drains, and screens. We also try to identify possible issues in relation to pre-existing damage or design issues that could affect works required.

Depending on the inspection results we may be able to repair or reglue some tiles as part of the shower sealing process, in this case we would be removing old grout and sealants as required / quoted, or alternatively if the shower requires more extensive tiling works to part or all of the shower, then generally speaking the shower screen, the tiles, cement bed, existing waterproofing will need to be removed, any damages below or behind the shower is repaired, then the shower will prepared ready for waterproofing.

If tiles have been re-glued or repaired as part of the shower sealing process, then the shower recess will be regrouted and sealed in accordance with the quoted scope of works.

Where more extensive tiling is required, a new waterproofing membrane will be installed to Waterproofing Standards, followed by partial or full retiling (as quoted), before the shower recess is regrouted and sealed in accordance with the quoted scope of works. With a new shower screen typically installed at the end of this process.

Shower Tiling FAQs

Our advice is quite simple. If a shower is not suitable for our Ultra Bond Technology Shower Sealing System, the only reliable long-term solution is to carry out proper shower waterproofing and shower tiling in line with current standards, while also repairing any damage behind or beneath the shower at the same time.

This is the only true long-term solution for a shower recess where sealing is no longer suitable. Cutting corners will usually lead to ongoing leakage and greater expense over time.

A very important point from our experience: never tile over tiles within a shower. This is one of the most common shortcut approaches we see. While tiling over tiles may sometimes be considered in other areas of a bathroom, a shower recess is exposed to a much higher volume of water during use. In these conditions, shortcuts will almost always lead to further problems down the track.

There is a little more to this question than most people realize. Proper shower tiling always starts with the correct preparation and waterproofing.

The waterproofing beneath the tiles should be completed by a licensed water proofer. Once this is in place, a qualified tiler should install the tiles to an appropriate trade standard, using the correct adhesives, spacing systems, and laying methods to achieve a durable, professional finish.

One practical issue to keep in mind is that if you are only re-waterproofing and tiling part or all of the shower, it can be extremely difficult if not impossible to find matching or similar tiles in comparison to the rest of the bathroom tiles outside the shower.

The timeframe for shower tiling depends on the size of the area and the scope of work.

In most cases, tiling is completed alongside waterproofing or full renovation works, with combined projects typically taking around 8–10 working days. Please note installation of new shower screens will require additional time beyond this estimate.

Yes, in some circumstances damaged shower tiles can be replaced.

However, a common misconception is that replacing one or a few tiles is a simple process. Even if matching replacement tiles are available, the real challenge is removing the existing tile without damaging the surrounding tiles.

There is also a risk that if the tile has been bonded strongly, removing it can damage the underlying substrate, sheeting, or cement bed.

For this reason, where suitable, we often recommend repairing damaged tiles rather than replacing them as part of our shower tiling services, depending on the condition of the shower and the owner’s expectations.

This is a great question. From our experience, many people don’t realize that tiles are manufactured in batches, which means a match is often not achievable.

Even if a tile appears to be the same, once the box is opened it can vary in shade, size, thickness, or finish, all of which can significantly affect the final result of any shower tiling work.

In most cases, particularly with older showers, it’s important to understand that achieving a close match, or even something that blends well, may not be possible.

Based on our experience, a better outcome is often achieved by treating part of the shower, or the entire shower recess, as a feature area and selecting a different tile that complements the space, rather than trying to match existing tiles.

Yes, where suitable, replacing a few tiles is generally cheaper than retiling the entire shower.

However, the process is not always as simple as people expect. Even when matching tiles are available, removing damaged tiles without chipping or disturbing surrounding tiles can be difficult.

There is also a risk that if the tiles are strongly bonded, removing them may damage the underlying substrate, sheeting, or cement bed.

For this reason, depending on the condition of the shower and the owner’s expectations, we often recommend considering tile repair as part of our shower tiling services rather than full replacement.
